Place Chat and People at This Place
How place chat unlocks, what anonymous and checked-in viewers can see, how the At location only filter behaves, and what the People at this place list represents.
Where you see this in the app
These surfaces appear on a place page:
| Surface | What it does |
|---|---|
Place chat | Temporary place-linked conversation room |
Check in here | Try to activate your place presence from the page |
People at this place | List professionals whose featured workspace is linked there |
Anonymous vs signed-in vs checked-in chat state
Place chat is not equally visible to every viewer state.
| Viewer state | What the user should expect |
|---|---|
| Anonymous | The broader page can still load, but live chat remains locked |
| Signed in but not checked in | Chat still stays locked until place presence is active |
| Checked in | Messages become visible and the reply box can be used when allowed |
This is why simply landing on the place page is not enough to unlock the room.
Check in to unlock live chat
The chat card tells the user this directly with Check in to unlock live chat.
That message means:
- the app wants an active place-linked profile-workspace check-in,
- the unlock is tied to active presence, not passive viewing,
Check in hereis the recovery path when you are signed in but still outside the unlocked state.
If the page already gives you a link like Open your profile workspace, that is there to help you confirm the active check-in context.
At location only and message visibility
Once chat is unlocked, the At location only filter affects which messages are shown.
| Control or state | Meaning |
|---|---|
At location only on | Prefer messages tied to active on-site presence |
At location only off | Show the broader visible message set for that place room |
| empty room after unlock | No visible messages yet, not necessarily a failure |
The chat design is intentionally short-lived and place-specific, so an empty room can simply mean nobody has spoken yet.
People at this place meaning
People at this place is not a generic social nearby list.
The component explicitly describes it as professionals whose featured workspace is set to that location.
Practical interpretation:
- the list is workspace-based, not a full census of every person nearby,
On-site nowis a stronger active-presence signal,Last active ...is a softer recency signal,View profileandOpen workspaceare the intended next actions from the list.
